More Than a To-Do List: Finding Meaning this Christmas

The Gift of Pausing

Nollaig Shona Daoibh! (Happy Christmas to you all!)

If you are reading this, you are likely in the middle of the "December Rush." The lists are long, the shops are busy, and your calendar is filling up faster than a kettle boils for tea.

At Get Up and Go Publications, we are all about action—about seizing the day and making things happen. But there is one secret to moving forward that we often forget: sometimes, you have to stop to notice where you are and to see where you are going.

This Christmas, instead of just rushing to the finish line of the year, we invite you to give yourself a gift that doesn’t come wrapped in a bow. The gift of a pause.

Reflecting on the "Twists and Turns" There is an old Irish proverb: "Is glas iad na cnoic i bhfad uainn" (The far-away hills are green). We spend so much time looking at the hills ahead—the goals for January, the plans for 2026—that we forget to look at the ground beneath our feet.

Take five minutes today with your diary or journal. Look back at the last 12 months.

  • What was a challenge you didn't think you could handle, but did?

  • Who stood by you when things got tough?

  • What is one small memory that still makes you smile?

It hasn’t all been perfect, but you are still standing. That resilience? That is worth celebrating more than any present under the tree.

The "Busy Woman’s" Christmas Wish To the busy women, the mums, the entrepreneurs, and the students who use our diaries: we know you are the ones usually making the magic happen for everyone else. You are buying the gifts, cooking the dinner, and checking the list twice.

But remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. This festive season, try to schedule "appointments with yourself" just like you would a business meeting. A ten-minute walk in the crisp winter air, a quiet coffee before the house wakes up, or simply writing down three things you are grateful for before bed.

Looking Ahead with Hope As the decorations go up, we naturally start thinking about the New Year. It is a time of fresh pages and new beginnings. Whether you are using our Busy Woman’s Diary, the Young Person’s Diary, or our classic Inspirational Diary, you have a blank canvas waiting for you.

Don't pressure yourself to have "New Year’s Resolutions" set in stone yet. For now, just focus on "New Year’s Intentions." How do you want to feel next year? calm? brave?  organised?

A Final Christmas Wish From all of us at Get Up and Go, we wish you a Christmas filled with peace, laughter, and a little bit of inspiration. May your days be merry, your tea be hot, and your heart be full.

Here’s to resting now, so we can Get Up and Go in the New Year.

"What is one thing you are grateful for this year? Let us know in the comments below!"

Merry Christmas!
